Preliminary Task Comparison
For my preliminary task within my AS portfolio I produced a newsletter cover for my high school (Deyes High), when planning this cover I looked at previous features of previous newsletters to see any common themes being shown. From this I discovered that the colours (red, blue and black) where used the most commonly, I took this feature and applied it to my own newletter cover to stay within the conventions of this specific newsletter. For this newsletter cover I used Photoshop as it has many features which can further my creative skills in the future. I found these software differcult to use at first, however as I continued to use it, it begain easier to use. Within this magazine cover I can see some positiven features which make it look semi-profesional. The first feautre is the use of the school badge, this feature is professional as it shows that the cover is owned by deyes high. Also within this newsletter cover I discovered that the images that I used make the cover look appealing, the images show a positive outlook on deyes, this makes it more appealing as showing positive images will increas audience appeal.
However From this preliminary task, you can see that there are features which make it unprofessional. For example the plain background makes the cover look bland and unappleaing towards audience and wont attract their attention. Another feature which makes it look unprofessional is the placement of the text and images, the placement of these features doesnt look professional.
This is my final magazine magazine cover for my AS portfilio, to create this I used skills from my preliminary task and enhanced them to create this cover. As you can see this cover has features which are different from my preliminary task. For example within my preliminary task, I noticed that a white background doesnt stand out for the target audience, so within this I made sure that the background was colour appealing do that I will be noticed more. Also I took my skills for font type into consideration, I feel that the font I have used makes it look professional as the viewers can read it easily and will gather the information from it. I feel that, unlike, my preliminary task I have placed the text and image in a suitable place to make it look professional. I feel that the main feature which makes the final product better than the preliminary is the colour useage, In my preliminary used boring colours, unaware that this makes it less eye-appealing, I have learned form this mistake and made my final product colour to make it eye-appealing.

Napster research
Napster was founded in 1999 by John Flanning. Shawn Flanning and Sean Parker. The website was oringinally a peer-to-peer file sharing system but transformed into sharing mp3 file which caused problems within the music industry. It was special for this reason as it was one of the first websites to do this. Napster had over five million users with its first year of being released, and at the end of 2000 they had estimated around 75 million users. Overall most users (aged around 14-30) found this software very useful as it aquired them free mp3 files which could expand to more people. When Napster was at its peak it was said that 10,000 were shared every 5 seconds. Some artist found Napster's method of transferring music a positive method of advertising and promotion. The Beastie Boys used their official website as the launching pad to deliver several songs free to fans. In exchange, the Beastie Boys required downloaders to give their e-mail addresses to be used in future marketing efforts. However other artists found that Napster was 'stealing' there music and tried to shut down the system. Artists like Madonna, who attacked Napster for having songs from upcoming albums available before release, have exceeded album sale expectations. Artists had not authorized their songs to be released through Napster or another service, the potential for such a market was clear. In July 2001, Napster shut down its entire network in order to comply with the injunction In 2001, the case was partially settled. Napster agreed to pay music creators and copyright owners a $26 million settlement for past, unauthorized uses of music, as well as an advance against future licensing royalties of $10 million. In order to pay those fees, Napster attempted to convert their free service to a subscription system.

How the internet has changed TV
The internet has changed the television industry in many ways. One way the internet has changed the television industry is through advertisment.
Advertisment has changed the television industry because it makes television programs more known to wider audiences. The process for this would be that that a television studio will contact an advertisiment agency and the agency will created a 'web advert' promoting the television program. Before the intenet was created in 1989, television programs will have been promoted through television it's self, although this is still a popular method in modern day, the use of advertising through the internet will greatly inform other countries about the program. For example the television program, house of cards, has only been produced on netflixs and through netfixs the programm can be hyperlinked from other websites. This is a strong use of advertisment because the program can only be shown on Netflixs so they will dispatch hyperlinks which link to the offical Netflixs page about house of cards. However the use of advertisment through the internet as its downfalls. One of the disadvantages of advertising through the internet is the marketting materials used, for example if a television company put an image of a television program on the internet that image can be used by anyone in the world, this may have a negative effect on the program because internet users can befoul these images which makes them less appealing.
One of the major inpacts on the television industry in the present day is televsion/film streaming websites such as Netflix's and Lovefilm. These streaming websites have majorly inpacted the television industry due to there large varity of televsions programs for a low price. These streaming websties can also be accessed through television, games consols, tablets and through labtops, this makes it more accessibly because television programs can only be shown at certain times through a television whereas on Netflixs and Lovefilm, they can be watched at anytime and anywhere if they use a tablet or laptop. I am talking here about Netflix and its newest TV series to be shown "House Of Cards", a political drama which has been produced and funded by Netflix itself to secure the exclusive rights to show the series on its streaming platform.

Crowdsourcing case studies
Ben & Jerry's
Ben & Jerry's is no stranger to fan feedback; some of its best-selling flavors were born from customer suggestions, but in 2010 it took the concept a step further with the Do the World a Flavor competition.
Fans were able to invent their own variety of the popular ice cream via a fun online "Creation Station." Finalists won a trip to the Dominican Republic to see a sustainable fair trade cocoa farm and the winning flavor was produced as an official Ben & Jerry's product. The specific aim of the contest was to raise awareness for fair trade ingredients, and with around 10,000 new flavor suggestions from the U.S. alone, Ben & Jerry's achieved that goal. We asked Sean Greenwood, grand poobah of public relations for Ben & Jerry's about the Do the World a Flavor competition.
Dunknin Dounuts
Dunkin Donuts has run two very successful Create Dunkin's Next Donut contests in the past, allowing fans to design their own perfect pastry product. Last summer they tried something a little different.
To promote the mixology potential of its Coolatta drinks, Dunkin' Donuts asked fans to collaborate on a playlist of summery songs that would go well with fan's favorite Coolatta flavors. The campaign netted 300,000 new Facebook fans while over 40,000 Pandora users added The ultimate Coolatta summer music mix! to their list of stations and spent nearly 14,000 hours listening to the station. We quizzed Ben Smith, interactive marketing manager for Dunkin' Donuts, about the Flavor Boogaloo project.
Vitaminwater
Coca-Cola-owned Glaceau brand vitaminwater gave its fans the vote with a flavor creator lab on its Facebook page. The goal was to come up with a brand new variety of drink. Fans could vote for their favorite flavor, play games and answer quizzes to help determine which functional benefit the beverage should offer and even have their say on the design of the label. The winning flavor named "connect" hit shop shelves in 2010, after 40,000 Facebook users had created unique label designs via the lab. Participants spent an average of approximately seven minutes engaging with the application. Matt Kahn, Senior Vice President of Marketing for vitaminwater, reveals the thinking behind their social strategy:

Crowdsourcing
Crowdsourcing is the idea when an individual needs to aquire idea from an large amount of people through the online community rather than companies.
Jeff Howe definned crowdsourcing as "Simply defined, crowdsourcing represents the act of a company or institution taking a function once performed by employees and outsourcing it to an undefined (and generally large) network of people in the form of an open call. This can take the form of peer-production (when the job is performed collaboratively), but is also often undertaken by sole individuals. The crucial prerequisite is the use of the open call format and the large network of potential laborers ". Jeff Howe refers to the social communities as the building block to crowd sourcing, as he says that it proves that people can self organize in spite of the fact that this once required a manager.
Crowds from on the internet due to issues and discussions within the world e.g. football, music etc. These topics can be discussed in day-to-day life. However the advantage to intenet site hosting these dicussions is that more people can access it easily. I am currenly not part of a crowd sourcing group.
Three positive effects of crowdsourcing are:
-It can be a cheaper method because you wont be going to companies to gather ideas
- It can be a great marketing method because you can directly interact with your target audience
- You can find some good and realiable informaiton
A negative effect is that the informaiton you aquire might not be realiable.

Critisims against web 2.0
Tim Berners (web founder) believes that there is no difference between web 1.0 and web 2.0, he believes this because he has pointed out features which are meant to be different but he thinks are still the same.
One of the surpossible differences between web 1.0 and web 2.0 is while web 1.0 is about connecting to computers wheras web 2.0 is about connecting to people. However Berners disagrees with this view as he believes that Web 1.0 was all about connecting people. It was an interactive space, and I think Web 2.0 is of course a piece of jargon, nobody even knows what it means. If Web 2.0 for you is blogs and wikis, then that is people to people. But that was what the Web was supposed to be all along. And in fact, you know, this 'Web 2.0,' it means using the standards which have been produced by all these people working on Web 1.0.
Berners also faults the term "web 2.0" as he still believes that there is no difference so there should be no change in term. He also thinks that there is no change in websites, he said that there is no change in significant change in websites in this ages then websites before it.

Development of the internet
The internet was concived in may 1969 Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau joined in 1990. On 6th of August 1991, a team of CERN engineers led by Sir Tim Berners-Lee worked to provide what was the first tangible example of the potential of the World Wide Web. Obama's twitter fundraising
In 2008 Barack Obama's used twitter to help fundraising and support within his 2012 election. They used YouTube with an expletive laded post holiday message for supporters, however when the numbers where counted Obama's aided now $1 billion to have been raised for the 2012 campaign. This broke the 10 figure milestone, the reason for this is it brought in more small dollar fundraising through email, social media, mobile and its websites during the final months. It was said that his team raised $690 million digitally in 2012 this was a significant raise on the $500 million raised for the 2008 campaign.

HMV News
HMV are one of the last music retail shops due to the internet offering easier and free music. The company is at the edge of closing down. Research shows that people only buy CD's from music stores because of the novilty of owning a DVD. Companies such as amazon and Itunes offer easier methods of music sales over the internet. Amazon's new free mp3 music scheme will make selling CD's for HMV even more differcult. However HMV generates money through its technology devices, Band T-Shirts, Videos Games and Posters.
Blockbuster News
Blockbuster is becoming bankcrupt due to their lack of DVD sales. Other companies are using easier methods of DVD sales which is taking blockbusters sales. Comapanies such as Netflixs and Love film are offering thousands of free films, streamed from the internet, for £5.99 a month. Also broadband companies such as Virgin and Sky offer on demand films for a cheaper price than Blockbusters. 1,400 stores are at risk to closure due to these companies and half have already been closed. 46% are high street shops, 20% are shopping centres, 17% are retail parks and the final 17% are stand alone locations.

Twitter Scandals
In 2008 the AMC learned that some fans had created fake Twitter accounts for the Mad Men crew This outpouring of fan zeal was, frankly, unacceptable. So the network complained to Twitter, and Twitter disabled those accounts. Tons of bad publicity later, AMC decided to allow the accounts.
Many times we have tried to convince ourselves that the Beliebers aren’t so bad. They’re just little girls, right? Just as we loved New Kids on the Block and JTT, they love Justin. Well, maybe not. Now that Bieber is dating Selena Gomez, some of his biggest fans are tweeting death threats to the 18-year-old singer/actress. In fact, the FBI has gotten involved, and some of these girls may face jail time.
Because he hadn’t yet disgraced himself enough in the minds of right-thinking people when he dared to lay a hand on Rihanna, Chris Brown recently came back for another round of assholery. When B2K’s Raz-B tweeted, “I’m just sittin here Thinking how can Eric Benet & ChrisBrown disrespect women as Intelligent as HalleBerry and Rihanna,” Brown didn’t exactly take the criticism in stride. Instead, he responded, “razb2k, you want attention! Grow up !!! Dick in da booty ass lil boy” — an especially classy comment, considering that Raz-B has come forward as a victim of sexual abuse. A few more homophobic tweets followed, and Raz-B chimed in with some cringe-worthy “I know you are, so what am I?”-style digs. Both have since apologized (Chris Brown tell us, “I love all of my fans, gay and straight”), but considering they should have known better in the first place, we’re not terribly impressed.
You know what will get you in trouble? Tweeting a photo of an underage girl’s no-no place. Hilton lost advertisers, drew tons of criticism, and could have faced jail time for disseminating child pornography for the stunt which he later claimed was fake, because why would Miley Cyrus ever go out in public without underpants? Then, this fall, inspired by the It Gets Better campaign, Hilton posted a video in which he pledged to be a better person. Here’s hoping he sticks to it.

Research- Play.com
The Jersey based firm of play.com is to be moved move on the ending of Low Value Consignment Relief, which allowed items less than £15 to be sold to the UK VAT-free. 147 of the staff will be made redudant in Jersey and 67 of Bristols and Cambridge will also be made redundant. Play.com will now become more like a shopping centre, no longer selling directly to customers. The Low Value Consignment Relief (LVCR) loophole was closed by the UK government in April 2012. A spokesperson confirmed the changes meant they were completely pulling out of Jersey, but about 200 staff would be left in the restructured company, which will be based in Cambridge.

Research- Amazon free mp3 downloads
Amazon have added a technology to their company, this is called 'AutoRip'. This is only available in America and it allows customers who have purchased a CD's to get a free digital mp3 copy. Customers will be able to store there free copy on Amazons cloud player which is accessibly through the web, smart phones and tablets. Any customer who has bought a CD in the catalogue from Amazon since the firm started trading in 1998 will be eligible to get a free MP3 copy of it. Amazon said it anticipated creating copies of millions of CDs. This new stage is mostly considered to go against other music companies such as Itunes. The Cupertino giant has similar cloud storage services for music and leads the market with more than 50% of the market share, while Amazon has less than 15%. Google offers a similar service.

The Long Tail Theory
The Long Tail theory was formed by Chris Anderson and he thought of the idea of a graph that goes from the top right to the bottom left. At the top of the graph is the popular products which big companies such as Amazon, HMV etc will store plenty of these products due to there popularity. Then at the bottom of the graph is the nich products which companies will store a low amount of this is either because they are not popular or because they are from years ago. This theory effects are econmy because popular sales will sell more and the unpopular wont.
An example which I will link this theory to is films. Within films the big named companies such as Warner Brothers will produce more sales with cinema tickets and DVD sales, this is because they are at the top of Andersons graph. Wereas independent companies such as Big Talk will not have as popular ticket and DVD sales because they are a nich company and are at the bottem of Andersons graph.
